It’s the most natural thing in the world.
There are some who will tell you that you can only do it when you’re well-rested, when your throat is “open,” when the Moon is in Venus and the Lark hangs on the Eastern Star…
They will also tell you that your voice is “delicate,” that it hangs by a thread, susceptible to any malicious wind, that it is perilously easy to do yourself injury…
But those sorts of beliefs – instilled sometimes by voice coaches – are a sort of superstition that makes you afraid of your own voice.
Instead of all that taboo and omen, here’s the truth:
Your magnificent voice is MADE to sing.
Your voice is powerful, resilient, and designed for a lifetime of expression.
Singing is your birthright and you can do it right now, with pleasure and ease.
For myself, I have only two gentle guidelines:
Don’t strain, shriek, or shout.
Enjoy the singing.
The rest – about vocal folds and mouth positions and astrological charts and dire warnings – is a heap of witch-doctory. If you like, you can set it aside today.
If you do, you’ll sing a lot more often and you’ll like it even more.
