It’s so lovely to give yourself what you need. And – to quote my big brother Dan – to do it up big.
Last night I treated myself to something I’ve drooled over for a long time: a subscription to “Slightly Foxed: the real reader’s quarterly.” I first spied a copy in the amazing book-town of Hay-on-Wye in England where I spent a whole day mooning about in bookshops. I was charmed immediately. I mean, a whole quarterly by book-lovers for book-lovers – what’s not to love?
When I woke up this morning, I felt like dancing. My heart’s desire! Why did I wait so long?
I have a whole winter of great reading planned, spurred on, no doubt by the essays I’ll be soon reading in “Slightly Foxed” with their exciting suggestions. Today, it came to me that I’ll need more light for the long winter nights, so off I went to buy a good reading lamp.
I just tested it all out with an hour reading Cork singer John Spillane’s BRILLIANT memoir/song-book and could not be happier with the set-up. Lots of light, warmest seat in the house, a place to set down my tea cup (it’s the firkin in which my grandmother stored her buttons), and a hassock to pull over for total decadence: AH!
The moral of the story: get yourself the thing that makes you feel like dancing. And then get the things you need to help yourself enjoy it to the hilt.
And then, to quote my father this time: Live it up, Cap!
